I haven't engaged with Dragonball for years - but the last time I did was 100% through DBZA (I think I got there via Yu Gi Oh abridged). I've been musing about a DBK watch at some point, but good to know it also doesn't hold up. Maybe I need to give it all a try via DBZA again and then try out Super.
What an interesting series, when it comes to textual variations, eh? Manga, non-canonical shows, movies, remakes of movies as TV, etc.
Oh yeah! I mean, I don't have time to get into it here but there are multiple translations, the weird case of Toei producing two Kai versions of the Buu arc for international distribution only, the music issues that led to Kai getting re-scored and reissued, etc.
I highly recommend Super. I mean, it takes a little bit to get there but it legitimately becomes the best iteration of 'Dragonball' by episode 40. They then have this 20-episode arc that is honestly the most well-plotted and emotionally powerful story DB has ever done, imo. Not without some faults here and there but really top tier, with hands down the best villain across all three series. The expanded final arc is also great, if not as quite great.
Reminds me of One Pace. I've tried to start One Piece like... 10 times over the years (got to episode 15). The (well-received) live-action Netflix show is giving me some more motivation to try again, but I refuse to do 90s Shonen in the Original 90s Format hahaha.
